SENIOR LEGAL OFFICER

  • Overall purpose

Responsible by delegation, to the Team Leader Legal Services, for handling all the Company’s legal matters.

  • Core duties and responsabilities
  • Negotiate and prepare loan security documentation, and attend to discharge of securities.
  • Maintain a securities register for all transactions and projects implemented by the bank, including responsibility for custody of title deeds, and prepare quarterly reports for discussion at Senior Management Committee meetings.
  • As initiating officer, prepare and provide/liaise with external counsel legal opinions on the adequacy of securities, undertake regular review to ensure securities continue to provide adequate cover against individual account exposures.
  • Work with the Business Development Department and Risk Department in project appraisals, and assume responsibility for the quality, relevance and effectiveness of proposed security arrangements for all new transactions.
  • Undertake regular review of outstanding legal cases, and ensure timely resolution and settlement; prepare regular Board and Management reports, and implement agreed action plans.
  • Undertake proactive legal environmental audit in all member countries, and provide bi-annual reports concerning changes, recommending appropriate risk mitigation measures.
  • Assume responsibility for insurance covers received for all lendings and projects, including assignment of policies and professional indemnity covers and follow-up payments as may be required.
  • Undertake such other duties as may be assigned by the Team Leader Legal Services, from time to time.
  • Job Qualifications and Experience
  • Masters Degree  in Commercial Law (LLM) Business Administration (MBA), Economics;
  • Comprehensive understanding of commercial law and transactions in Anglophone and Francophone countries in Africa;
  • Minimum of 7 (seven) years prior experience in undertaking roles of similar nature, preferably at multinational or multilateral institutional levels;
  • Computer literacy.
  • Key skills and desired behavior

  • Working knowledge of both French and English are minimum requirement for this position.
  • Flexibility and responsiveness in providing high quality customer service.
  • Strong communication skills, and ability to develop proposals, concept papers, position papers, as well as write reports and prepare relevant publications.
  • Demonstrate technical expertise in strategic change management, risk management, quality assurance, as well as monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ability to maintain professional status, and keep abreast of evolving legal trends through continuing legal education.
Proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation, email, internet, etc.
